Catch up with Bishops headboy Michael Ford

During the past week, we were very fourtanate enough to catch up with Bishops Headboy Michael Ford to hear what he had to say about life and the upcoming academic school year.

This is what he had to say:

My aim for the year ahead is to leave Bishops in a better place by the time I matriculate. I am simply a custodian of the Mitre and I hope to hand it over at the end of the year in a better position. My focus will be to bring back a strong sense of pride for our school. I believe that when pride is involved then individuals and teams are inspired to achiever more, communicate better and build upon each others strenghts.

Thoughts on leadership: Leadership for me is based on two key things. Firstly dont tell people what to do, but instead take them to where they need to be. Don't make promises you cant keep.and continue to strive for new heights. Real leaders are not afraid to take risks, make tough decisions and create new ideas along the way. The second point is about building trust.  I have always believed that trust is something that you earn through the way you are able to lead. This is achieved by staying truthful and honest and being friendly and approachable. All ways showing encouragement and support for others even when they make mistakes. When a leader has the trust in those they leading, everyone operates far better as a unit.

What does it mean to be apart of the broader Bishops Family: Bishops is far more than just a school, to me its an entire community who come together as a wider family. We are all playing a small part in something that is far greater than all of us. Over my 4 years at the College, Bishops has come to hold a truely special place in my heart and I absolutly love this school. In this family we are able to create friendships that will last a lifetime, and the bonds that are formed are incredibly special.

Sporting and personal goals for the year ahead: To win a major tournament as 1st team Waterpolo captain. As part of the 1st team rugby side, I want to help lead the side with humility and to achieve the goals we will set out as a team for the season ahead.  Personally on the rugby field I would like to represent my Western Province in June / July this year.

Message to the boys of Bishops: On behalf of the 2020 Matric class, we are extremly excited for what lies ahead and all the challenging and enjoyable times that are yet to come. We hope by the end of the year we can leave a positive legacy for the rest of the school to remember us by. Please look forward to this year ahead with hope and optimism. Always remember to uphold the values of the Mitre and keep in mind our aspirations for the year ahead. If this can be achieved then we will all be able to leave the school in a better place.

We would like to thank Michael for giving us his thoughts and wish him well for the year ahead.
