Founders Day 2019
Founders Day has traditionally been held on the Friday closest to the 15th March. Next year’s first term dates have been moved forward in order to incorporate some public holidays during the holiday period. Furthermore, the cricket season ends on Saturday 02 March 2019 with the Rondebosch fixture.
In view of the above, the school has very kindly allowed Founders Day 2019 to take place on Friday 01 March 2019. This means that sporting codes will be played against current pupils, especially in cricket. We thank Bishops for prioritising this non-academic day, and look forward to seeing ODs back on the Estate.

Mandela: My Friend, My Prisoner - Breakfast with Christo Brand

Chris Santilhano (1981G), Christo Brand and Nick Heesom (1961W)

Nelson Mandela and Christo Brand

Nicky Bicket (1973F): "This year, the centenary of Nelson Mandela's birth, has seen a flurry of publications, documentaries, reminiscences and talks on the great man. Everyone, it seems, was Mandela's closest friend, intimate confidante and personal advisor. Pretenders most of them, but one who is the real thing is Christo Brand who at the age of 18 became Madiba's prison warden on Robben Island. Over the rest of Mandela's life, including his transfer to the mainland, release from jail, President of South Africa and then, finally as a pensioner, Christo remained at Mandela's side, initially as his guard and over time, his extraordinarily close friend.

Christo's story is told in his recently-released book, Mandela, My Prisoner, My Friend. He also tells his story in person at functions such as the breakfast the UK ODs held in the House of Lords on Friday 15th June, hosted by Lord St John of Bletso (Anthony St John (G, 1974))."

British Lions Reunion Tour to South Africa
The 1968 British Lions Rugby team is currently on a tour of South Africa. Blake Gowar (2005) from Constantia Wine Tours facilitated their Cape Town leg. Gus Allen (1982F) hosted the team on his farm, Constantia Glen, where the winemaker is Justin van Wyk (2003S).

The OD Secretary presented the team with copies of The Old Diocesan, and a green OD rugby supporter’s jersey.

OD Touchies: Thursdays from 16:30
For the past few weeks, ODs under the initiation of Rob Beighton (1995G), have gathered to play touch rugby at Bishops. The concept is proving successful, as the guys are getting fitter, and having more fun. Any ODs wishing to join in are most welcome, irrespective of fitness level. During the school holidays (until Thursday 12 July) we use the Cemetery field, and thereafter the Lutgensvale fields. Warm-up starts at 16:30, and ODs are most welcome to join at their convenience.

Paul Cannon (1953S)
Paul very kindly donated a book on St George’s Grammar School, Cross of Gold, to the OD resource collection. He also connected the ODU with Stephen Bornman of the Old Georgian Union.

Another school started by Bishop Robert Gray, Zonnebloem College, featured in the Cape Times of 12 June. The article relates to the donation of water tanks to the school.

Alex Vavatzanidis (2016M)
Congratulations to Alex who has been appointed part-time music teacher at Micklefield School. This girl’s primary school, which turns 90 this year, has a long-standing relationship with Bishops, and many ODs started their school careers there.
Seen with Alex at the Grade 4 Music evening are ODs James Swift (1987W) and Gus Kennedy-Smith (2017G).

Mark Wilson (2013O)
Congratulations to Mark, who has recently started a job at the PGA Tour in the USA

Robert Bluett (1968F)
Rob: "I have finished writing a book on Human Asset Management, not that you need any advice in this area, but it is told as a story of my journey through the last thirty years.
HERE is the link in case you would like to read a soft copy version."

Greg Mills (1979O): No horse named Morbid ever won this race
Greg Mills visited Le Mans in France and wrote an article of this year’s race. To read it, click HERE

Patrick Wingfield (1952S)
A lovely funeral service was held for Patrick at St Andrews Church, Newlands, on Monday 18 June. As if a sign of blessing, a great rain outpour soaked the dry Cape Town land just prior to the start of the service. We wish Richard, Jeremy, Dylan, and the rest of the family comfort for this time of mourning.

Owing to so much OD related news, it is often challenging to report on the wide range of Bishops activities.
For ease of use, we thus include links to the
Bishops Website, the Principal’s Newsletters, and also the UK OD Newsletter
Please enjoy spending some time reading these, as they are the best means of keeping up to date with Bishops.

Sunday Times, 10 June 2018 referring to OD Vince vd Bijl in an article entitled “Upright Van der Bijl in place to hit Zim cricket for a six”:

Van der Bijl thinks in his sleep, does what he says he will do, and is afraid of nothing and no one.

Warm regards
