10th October 2019 Dear Jeremy Yesterday we welcomed 150 new recruits, as the class of 2019 entered The Mitre for the first time, not as pupils, but as ODs. With their newly acquired OD ties around their necks and a copy of The Old Diocesan Magazine in hand, their excitement for the future was almost tangible. The ODU Strategy Survey will be closing TOMORROW, so this is your last chance to have a say in the key aspects of the ODU's direction. We thank Nicky Bicket (1973F) for all his effort in this regard so far. |
Kind regards, The OD Office |
Strategy 2020-2025 Should the ODU actively be a “force for good”, should Bishops benefactors be eligible for ODU membership and should the organising and management of ODU sports, functions and events be delegated to the ODs themselves? Add your answers to those who have already completed the strategy questionnaire. It closes tomorrow. This is your last chance to have your say. So please get onto it soon by clicking the button below. |

Tank Lanning (1989S) Last week we reported on the Ikeys' success after defending their University World Cup title for the second year running in Japan. Whilst five ODs were part of the playing team, we failed to mention the 6th OD involved in the victory: Fowards Coach, Tank Lanning. Tank reported: "Touring is what you make of it. And it was brilliant to see the guys hitting their straps both between and outside the white lines. I am guessing that not only were memories made for life, but friendships, too." |
Ross Goodwin (2017G) and Tristan Leyds (2015S) Well done to Ross (UCT) and Tristan (UWC) who represented their Universities at the VarsitySports 7's at Pirates Rugby Club in Johannesburg last weekend. |
Ian Bekker (1956F) The OD Union wishes Ian a belated but very happy birthday as he celebrated his 80th birthday recently. He reports: "On 28th September 2019 I became an octogenarian - the first male in the Bekker clan to achieve this milepost. We had a good bash at the Knysna Yacht Club. I was probably the most surprised person there!" |
Dr Mark MacGregor (left) (1987S) with Peter Steyn (1955S) Mark returned to the school after matriculating from Bishops in 1987. |
Tim Richman (1995B); Jeremy Ryall (2014F) & Howard Cooke (1972G) Howard came in to meet with the archivist, Dr Murray to discuss aspects of Bishops history, the Rhodes scholarship and Sophie Gray. At which stage Tim arrived to meet with Jeremy, both of whom are on the editorial panel of 'The Old Diocesan'. It was good to see the different generations of ODs get together and have a chat. |
From the Principal Guy Pearson reports: "It was a very brief and busy holiday! Many of our boys and teachers were in involved in holiday activities and performed exceptionally well. The highlight was the performance of our boys at the National Individual Public Speaking and Debating Championships held at Michaelhouse. We enjoyed a wonderful start to the day with a performance by our excellent Wind Band who played two pieces for us." |
