Please join us at The Mitre for Tea on Tuesday 03 October 2023 at 11.00am.
The speakers in a colloquium are Peter Hyslop retired Staff, and Paul Murray the ODA.
The first colloquium will be presented by Peter who will speak on OD John Oates, poet, and aviator, in context of his time at Bishops and of his subsequent tragic war experience. It will also trace the influence (on his writing) of the cultural “Renaissance” that Hubert Kidd inspired at Bishops. Kidd fostered, and in many instances created a range of literary, historical, and cultural societies which are now accepted as normal in a school like Bishops. Peter’s cousin Merilyn Park will be reading a few of John Oates’ poems.
The second colloquium is by Paul on the ecclesiastical feud between Bishops Colenso and our Founder Robert Gray. This will trace the difference in perspectives of two backgrounds, two strands of thought, two sets of circumstances, and compare Zonnebloem College established by Gray and Ekukhanyeni by Colenso.
