Thank you to Peter Hyslop (Past staff) for sending us news of Michael Beckurts' latest exhibition.

Peter writes: "This is the press release of the current exhibition at the Test Kitchen (Old Biscuit Mill precinct) of artwork by Michael Beckurts (OD 2018). Michael was the winner of the Sophie Gray Art Exhibition in 2018, and is currently a third year student at the Cape Town Creative Academy.

For an undergraduate student stage a one-man exhibition is an exceptional achievement."

Press Release - ARCHIVES

The Test Kitchen introduces a show of new artwork “ ARCHIVES” by Michael Beckurts.

Michael Beckurts is a third year design student at the Cape Town Creative Academy in Woodstock, Cape Town. In Michael’s words, “These works draw on memories of places, feelings and states of being.” His mental archives contrast light and dark values in spaces, familiar, from a unique perspective. They evoke a strong sense of emotion which is achieved through the use of watercolour, charcoal and coffee. “Watercolour is delicate and unpredictable. Coffee is warm and earthy. Charcoal is raw and imperfect”.

He has captured vistas of live music nights, evening farm road walks and family gatherings. Michael has a personal connection to the milieu in all his paintings. They are rendered in their simplest form to reveal their essence. Michael's artworks are drawn solely from memory. Michael has a congenital musculoskeletal condition. “Because I use a wheelchair, being aware of my surroundings is a necessity. I have to intentionally observe and remember obstacles like kerbs, steps and doorways to orientate myself. While my physical limitations are restrictive, they have forced me to adapt and find my own style.”

The exhibition runs from 29 March until 29 May 2021 at The Test Kitchen, The Old Biscuit Mill, Woodstock.
Guided viewings with the artist will be announced via Instagram @michaelbeckurts @thetestkitchen
Limited edition prints are also available.
