Tony Honoré (1938F) | 1921 - 2019

It is with great sadness that we inform you of the passing of Tony Honoré (F, 1938) who died earlier today (26 February) at the age of ninety-seven.

Tony was regarded by his contemporaries as one of the most intellectually gifted boys to come out of Bishops. At School, he developed a passion for acting and took the leading roles in the school plays - all under the direction of Hubert Kidd - in his four years of college. He was also an excellent sportsman and athlete.

He was awarded the Bishops Rhodes Scholarship in 1939, but deferred his entry into Oxford to enrol to fight in WWII and was severely wounded in the Battle of Alamein.

He took up his Rhodes Scholarship after the war and then taught at Oxford for the next seventy years. He was acknowledged internationally as an expert in the fields of causation and jurisprudence. He was a significant contributor to the drafting of the South African Constitution, having argued successfully for its creation in the first place.

Tony was a Fellow of All Souls College Oxford and the Regius Professor of Law from 1971-1988.

He and Deborah attended our pub lunches in Oxford and he will be greatly missed.

To Deborah go our heartfelt condolences.
