In the interests of reconciliation, unity, healing and growth, an agreement was reached at the Special General Meeting between the Old Diocesans’ Union Committee and the Old Diocesans who had called the meeting. At the conclusion of the SGM the motion was withdrawn without being voted upon.

Broadly speaking, the following has been agreed: In accordance with OD Union Constitution, a Standing Committee, dealing with oversight of reconciliation, unity, healing and governance will be constituted. It will consist of seven ODs.

It is proposed that the Standing Committee will be named the Archbishop Tutu Committee in honour of the unifying role that the Archbishop has played in our country and because, as the Archbishop of Cape Town, he was once the Episcopal Visitor to the school.

The Standing Committee, which will begin its work as soon as possible, will take submissions from ODs, prepare reports and submit proposals to the OD Union committee for consideration for adoption. In due course, the Mitre will issue an invitation to ODs who wish to be considered for appointment to the Standing Committee.

It is further agreed that Wilbur van Niekerk, David MacGregor and Jonathan Shaw will join the OD Union committee as observers and, in due course, will be co-opted onto the Committee as places become vacant.

The OD Union shall now move forward with renewed energy and commitment, learning from the past and ensuring that it serves all of its community, the old boys of Bishops, for the future.
