John Smuts (1969S) sent us the results of the 41st edition of the Walker Cup:
It was another successful and enjoyable day – played at Rondebosch Golf Club on a good conditioned course, but in fairly strong winds. Below is a full result sheet, plus a list of all the prize sponsors, and the individual or pairs winners of the various prizes.
There are 2 photos on the results sheet, with the bottom one being the pair from “Bosch” (Jonathan Sands & Luke Nogueira) who won the Alan Alexander trophy for the highest stableford score of 46 points. The photo on top, is of myself and the Bosch organiser (Gary Fouche), both holding the Walker Cup after the result ended in a 16-all draw in the 32 games!
This is only the 2nd time in the history of the event that this has happened (the other was at Royal Cape in 2000).
This now leaves the tally at 22 wins to Bosch and 19 to Bishops.
As you will see, there were 10 pairs who ended with 43 points, in joint 5th place. We were going to give prizes down to 10th, but decided to spread out the prizes down to 14th, so that there was no need for any count-outs for all the 43’s.
Appeal for OD Golf Representatives and help organising the Old Quad Challenge
As many of you know, I tried to step-down from organising the two main OD golf events (being the Walker Cup and the Old Quad Challenge), after last year’s Walker Cup, but nobody came forward to offer their services. I was on a trip around the States during Aug/Sept last year – the usual time for the Old Quad, but it did not take place as I was away, and it would also have clashed with 2 World Cup tournaments (cricket & rugby).
Hopefully it will get back onto the schedule this year. And hopefully the OD Union Committee can find someone on their Sports sub-committee to take over organising these events.
They are both worthy events to carry on with, between the 4 rival all-boys schools in Cape Town's Southern Suburbs.
Special thanks
I will end by thanking my Rondebosch BH counterpart, Gary Fouche, for all his involvement over the years. He has been a pleasure to work with. I would also like to thank Rondebosch Golf Club and their staff for again facilitating an enjoyable afternoon of golf and camaraderie.
