Hearty congratulations to Bulelani Ngqukuvana (2017S)Wesley Gardener (2016O), Malachy Barbour (2017G), and Indrees Abdulla (2018M) for representing the Western Province under 21 A side at the National Under 21 Interprovincial Hockey Tournament held in Johannesburg between 8 and 13 April 2019.
The WP side managed to defeat Southern Gauteng 2-0 in a scintillating match at the Randburg Astro to head up their pool. Idrees was the leading WP goal scorer, and the side had the best goal scoring differential and also the most goals scored.
WP then beat WP Peninsula 3-2 in their semi-final clash, with Wesley scoring Province's third goal.
For the final match of the Tournament WP faced Northern Blues, who had beaten Southern Gauteng in the other semi-final.
It was a pulsating affair, with WP opening the scoring and looking set to take back the title from the defending champions for most of the first half. Then the Northern Blues dug deep, and with some well-disciplined and robust play put the pressure back onto WP, outplaying the men from the Western Cape. The final score was 2-1 to the Northern Blues.
Well done to the ODs for helping their side in earning a well-deserved silver medal.
