Zonnebloem College Book Launch

Thursday 28 February 2019
Bishop Geoff Davies (1959W), South Africa's "Green Bishop," attended the launch of Zonnebloem College and the genesis of an African intelligentsia 1857 -1933 at The Book Lounge, Roeland Street, Cape Town.
Written by authors Janet Hodgson and Theresa Edlmann, the book will be of particular interest to ODs. It was not long after the Diocesan Collegiate School (later known as Bishops) pupils moved out of Protea in Bishopscourt to Woodlands, that Zonnebloem College was started in the very same buildings under the watchful eyes of Robert and Sophy Gray.
Written on the back cover of the book is a review by Emeritus Professor Chris Saunders (1960O):
"Anyone wishing to know how South Africa's African intelligentsia emerged must read this well-researched study, which includes fascinating biographies of key nineteenth-century figures and which has many contemporary resonances."
