Congratulations to Vernon R.L. Head, recipient of BirdLife South Africa’s 2026 Austin Roberts Memorial Medal!
For more than 25 years, Vernon has helped shape BirdLife South Africa through a remarkable range of foundational contributions. He served as Chairman of our Board of Directors, guided the evolution of our organisation’s logo following our transition from the Southern African Ornithological Society, and spearheaded countless innovative campaigns.
These include the creation of our Flock at Sea voyages, the Flufftail Festival, the Save Our Seabirds Festival, and the establishment of the Listers’ Club.
An acclaimed architect, Vernon also led the pro bono renovation designs of both the Johannesburg head office, Isdell House, and the Claremont office in Cape Town.
Alongside these achievements, he has authored bestselling books on birds and nature.
The ODU congratulates Vernon on this significant achievement.
