Year-end Message and outlook for 2024 from ODU Chairman and ODU President

Martin Bey (1990B) and David Carter (1958G) share this message with ODs across the world.

Dear Old Diocesans,

As we complete another full year, we extend warm greetings to all of you around the world on behalf of the OD Union. May this festive season bring you joy, and may the upcoming year usher in peace and positive transformations.

Reflecting on the past year, 2023 marked a significant shift in the ODU with OD Ambassador, Paul Murray, leading the way, supported admirably by the office staff, Dedry and Lynn. The Mitre team has driven a notable increase in activities, recognising the dispersed nature of our global membership. These endeavors will undoubtedly continue to benefit our diverse community.

We acknowledge both the challenges and triumphs we faced across various spheres.  We celebrate all the OD accomplishments in academics, sports, arts, culture, and business. We are pleased to see an increase in numerous local events and gatherings, from the Gauteng Chapter rejuvenation evening to the Boland Branch big braai, that have showcased our vibrant community. Abroad the well-established UK Branch, Europe regions, and branches in the US, Canada, and Australia continue to thrive, fostering engagement and camaraderie.

Next year marks the Bishops 175th Celebration, and we encourage OD involvement in school events and festivities. The OD Annual dinner, preceding Founders Day, promises to be a highlight at Kelvin Grove. This will be followed by the annual Founders Day Sport event on Friday, 8 March.  Notably, a Food, Art and Wine Festival is planned for July 2024. The committee remains committed to various initiatives, including the continued revitalisation of the Mentor Program.

As part of the 175 celebration, ODs have generously contributed to a stained glass window for the Brooke Chapel. Your donations are vital to bringing this project to fruition, and any support is greatly appreciated.

Looking ahead, the AGM in March will see the election of the OD Committee for 2024. The Mitre has communicated details, and we echo the call for those considering committee participation to carefully weigh the commitment, especially for international members. Embracing new ways of interaction, we navigate interesting times as we envision the future together.

In closing, may this festive season bring you peace and joy. For those celebrating Christmas, a Merry Christmas to you. Stay safe, and return rejuvenated for a fantastic New Year.

Warm regards,

David Carter (1958G)
President, OD Union

Martin Bey (1990B)
Chairman, OD Union
