Message from the Chairman - A Sporting Code of Conduct

Following a contentious water polo match earlier in the year, the leadership of Bishops and Rondebosch have engaged during a series of meetings. The purpose of the meetings is to strengthen ties between the two schools, but also to determiner and establish a sporting code of conduct to which both school communities would subscribe.

The code, once finalised, will apply not only to the participating boys, but also to coaches, parents and old boys. From our perspective, it was interesting to note that there were concerns expressed about the "uninhibited enthusiasm" of some old boys. I will be liaising with Adrian Dommisse, the Chairman of the Rondebosch Old Boys, to flesh out what we understood these concerns to be.

Representing Bishops at the meeting was Guy Pearson (Principal), Simon Peile (Chairman of Council) and I (Chairman of the Union). Matthew Pierce chaired the meeting. Most remarkable of all was the composed and gracious participation by the leadership of the learners. I was most impressed by Tim Sharples (Head Boy), Okuhle Minyi (Deputy Head Boy, Day Boys), Jeff Malherbe (Deputy Head Boy, Boarders), Logan Tait (Student Representative Forum Chairman) and Michael Steytler (Head Cheer Leader). I look forward to welcoming these fine young men to the Union next year.

As for the code, I will report back as soon as I'm in a position to do so.
