2018 Cableway Charity Challenge

13 Apr 2018
Giving Back

This year, the 10th annual Cableway Charity Challenge takes place. The event was founded in 2009 by Anton de Waal (1991), his wife Brigette and Adam Pike (1992) to address the crisis of AIDS affected infants in Cape Town.

The first event was a modest success raising about R500 000. Since 2009, the event has grown tremendously from 50 to 200 athletes, the maximum number of participants allowed to compete. It is expected that over R1 000 000 will be raised on the day of the event.

Competitors will climb to the top of Table Mountain via Platteklip Gorge, descend via Table Mountain Cableway to the start to commence another muscle-burning lap of the route. They will have between sunrise and sunset to attempt as many ascents of Platteklip Gorge as possible. Athletes are sponsored for each completed lap.  The record was set some years back, 13 ascents. Bruce Smith (1987G) is attempting his personal best on his year of participation.

This year's event focuses on educational development and the general needs of vulnerable children. ODs are welcome to support this initiative by sponsoring an athlete here www.charitychallenge.co.za
