We receive weekly news from our ODU Ambassador, Dr Paul Murray, and it is fair to say that he is very busy living his best life!

As an academic and very sociable person, his time in Cambridge will certainly provide both of these elements in abundance.

In the background of the headline picture of Paul Murray and Philip Hazel (1961/2F), is King’s College renowned for the regular evensongs so beautifully sung.  Paul appreciated the kind assistance he received from Dr Hazel when he arrived and hopes to have ongoing coffee meetings whilst at St John’s where Philip is a regular visitor.

Philip was at St John’s which also was the College of others ODs.  This is the current list that we have:

  • Dr Jannie Graaff (1943F) the brother of Sir De Villiers Graaff (1928):
  • Dr Raymond Pollard (1961G)
  • Professor Peredur Williams (1962F)
  • Sir Peter Robinson (1966S)

And more recently;

  • Pete Husemeyer (2005S)
  • Mubeen Goolam (2006/7G)
  • Nicholas Janisch (2016/7G)

If any ODs know of ODs who are Cambridge Johannians we will acknowledge them by adding them to the list.  Paul intends on writing a longer article which might appear elsewhere in future about our connections with St John's College.

Paul has seen a number of other ODs since his arrival in the UK.  The following ODs are also based in Cambridgeshire:

  • Nick Koster (2007/8F)
  • Jeremy Wilkinson (2015K)
  • Ty Wills (2013/4K)
  • Christian Stehlik (2016F)

Jeremy Wilkinson and Paul Murray meeting over coffee in Cambridge

A coffee and catch up were the order of the day when Paul Murray and Jeremy Wilkinson, who is studying in Cambridge for his PhD over the next three years, met up.

Paul has plans to connect with the ODs in Oxford and London soon.  It seems that his social calendar is getting pretty full.

For those who may not be aware, whilst in Cambridge, Paul is researching the life of Bishop Colenso as the Visiting Colenso Fellow.  Exciting and stimulating stuff indeed.
