Paul Getaz (1962,O) passed away at the age of 79 in Johnson City, Tennessee on March 20, 2024.  His last appointment was: Chief Medical Officer.  He listed his post-nominals as

"E. Paul Getaz, MD, PhD, MBA, MFA, FRCP (London), FRCP (Edinburgh), FACP".

We received the following obituary from Paul's wife Brenda:

After Bishops, Paul attended UCT Medical School and did his internship and senior internship at Groote Schuur Hospital. Paul then spent just under two years in London doing neuropsychiatry at St Thomass’ Hospital, returned to Cape Town and did his medIcine and hematology residencies, followed by a couple of years as a consultant at Tygerberg. This was followed by a move to Buffalo, New York (NY), to complete a medical oncology fellowship at Roswell Park Memorial Institute. He taught at the State University of NY, and subsequently at Tufts University and New England Medical Center in Boston. Paul moved to Memphis, TN where he practiced medical oncology and hematology, until becoming a victim of the disease he was trying to cure.

After very aggressive surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation, he worked in bone marrow transplantation, became interested in the business of medicine and completed his MFA and MBA at the University of Memphis, and PhD at the University of Tennessee, while working as the chief medical officer of a large hospital complex.

Paul and his wife, Brenda, retired to the mountains of East Tennessee where he did some clinical medicine, consulting by computer from home, and remained a professor of medicine and professor of pharmacoeconomics at the University of Tennessee.

Paul was a lifelong dog enthusiast, who loved, bred, and showed mastiffs and a Portuguese water dog for 30 years. He and Brenda also spent much of their time enjoying photography, fly fishing, along with travel and music. Paul and Brenda visited RSA in 2007, and of course, he took her to Bishops. When they walked into the old Chapel, there was a class under way, and on seeing her, all the boys sprang to their feet. This would never have happened in the US. At the end of the school visit, she said to Paul,

“Now I understand the influence this school had in your life and its contribution to who you are.”

He leaves his wife, Brenda, 4 children and 3 grandchildren in the eastern US between Florida and NY.
