Nicky Bicket (1973FH) recently returned from Pittsburgh USA where among other things he was invited to the celebration of the memorial bench, commissioned to remember his twin brother Alexander 'Zandy' Paul Bicket who died on 2 December 2024.
Having graduated from law school in 1988 - in the same year he became a U.S. citizen - Zandy followed an impressive career including more than two decades in private practice before being elected Judge of the Court of Common Pleas in 2011 where he made history as the first South African immigrant elected to any U.S. court.
An extract from his encomium reads: His greatest passion was the law, and his decisions were marked by thoughtfulness, fairness, and a deep respect for the principles of justice.
Earlier this year the Allegheny County Bar Association began planning to purchase a commemorative bench in honor of their colleague, Judge Alexander 'Zandy' Paul Bicket.
Traditionally, colleague judges fund a memorial to honour any of their own who die while still in office.
This has now come to fruition.
