John Dobson (1986K) becomes the most successful head coach in DHL Stormers history.

John Dobson (1986K) became the most successful head coach in DHL Stormers history last week when his team beat the Bulls in the URC final at the DHL Stadium to become the inaugural URC champions – the first time the DHL Stormers have won an international competition.

Five ODs, Tim Swiel (2011F), Cornel Smit (2015W), Tristan Leyds (2015S), Connor Evans (2020W) and Sacha Mngomezulu (2020F) represented the DHL Stormers at various stages of the competition, while Duncan Cruickshank (1985G) was part of the management team. Starting as 88-to-1 outsiders, the team had an impressive home run of 11 unbeaten games at DHL Stadium, eventually beating the Bulls in a tense all-South African home final. Matthew Pearce (1987G) was once again behind the microphone for the SuperSport TV coverage of the game.

The DHL Stormers also won the URC Shield for being the best South African team in the league stages of the competition and will now also play in the Heineken Champions Cup in Europe, which will take place during the 2022/23 URC competition, playing against London Irish and French club Clermont home and away in Pool B.

Stormers rugby is once again among the heavyweights of world franchise rugby and we congratulate Dobbo and his team on some incredible performances.
