David Murray (1961S) passing

Farewell 'Murray 7'.

David Murray (1961S) passed away in Kettering on 5th May, 2023.  He was an exceptional man, and he was awarded an OBE in 1994.  We are very grateful to his wife Julie, David's widow - to whom we send our sincere condolences - for this short obituary:

David came to Bishops in 1958, a 3-night and 4-day train journey from Rhodesia.  He arrived as 'Murray 7'.

During his time at Bishops, David excelled at sport, playing both cricket and rugby for the school, (WP school's cricket for 3 years) and WP lightweight champion in boxing, plus athletics. After UCT [BA (hons), MBA], he had a long career with Rio Tinto. This took him from Sabi-Limpopo in Rhodesia, to Windhoek in Namibia, to Bristol UK and then as CEO to Portugal/ Spain, then to Brazil as CEO for South America.

3 years back in Bristol, working for a Brazilian company, and finally 3 years in Johannesburg with Anglovaal. He continued with some non-exec work for a few years, before finally retiring properly. Our 3 children, with the grandchildren, all live within driving distance...a real pleasure, after our itinerant life.

The final 20 years were lived happily in a village in the East Midlands.

He often talked of Bishops and continued to take an interest in the School. In a private biography, he wrote, “ Bishops was and remains a wonderful school, with choir and music being ranked equally with rugby and cricket in the social hierarchy
