Jacob Fried is in Mallett House.  He is currently in Matric, preparing for his A Levels in October November 2024.

He completed his AS Levels, with distinction in 2023.

Here are some biographical details: He came to Mallett House in 2020 from the Prep. The pandemic shifted schooling online, but he remained at home even longer than most, resulting in a significant portion of his Grade 8 year being lost.

In Grade 9 he became more engaged in school life and joined the Debating Society – one of the many brilliant opportunities that Bishops offers at a high level.  Since then, he has been selected for two South African national sides - debating and public speaking respectively, ending as the national public speaking champion in 2023.

He subsequently competed in the World Individual Debating and Public Speaking Championship that same year, where he was a double finalist.

In Grade 10, he started to take academics very seriously, achieving first place in his grade along with six subject prizes.

In grade 11, he made the pivotal decision to join Bishops’ inaugural CIE A-Level programme – another of the fantastic opportunities offered by the College.

With A-Levels being unfamiliar territory, he devoted a lot of energy to them. In October last year, he wrote his AS Levels in Mathematics, English Language and Literature, Economics, and History.

He recently received the news that he ranked first in the world in English and History, and second in the world in Economics; this was out of 237 000 people in 135 countries who wrote AS Levels.

He says: "It continues to be such a privilege to be at Bishops. With the help of my outstanding teachers, I hope to have a great final year of A levels in my last year at the College".

The prizes that Jacob won are:

First in the world AS Level English Language and Literature;

First in the world AS Level History;

Second in the world and first in South Africa in AS Level Economics.

We at the ODU are immensely proud of Jacob's great achievements; and congratulate him and wish him well for the Finals!
