Congratulations and Awards |
Congratulations to Professor Tim Noakes – Robert Gray Medal Recipient for 2024/5!
The Old Diocesans Union is proud to celebrate one of our own, Professor Tim Noakes (White House, 1966), as the recipient of the Robert Gray Medal—the highest honour awarded to an Old Diocesan for exceptional achievement and contribution to society.
In a remarkable assembly held at Bishops in the Memorial Chapel on Friday 10 May 2025, we recognised Prof Noakes for his trailblazing work in sports science. It was a privilege for our boys to hear directly from him—a powerful reminder of the heights one can reach with dedication, courage, and an inquiring mind.
Professor Noakes has made global contributions in sports science, which was reflected in the citation read by the Head of School, Luke Carter, at the ceremony ... of a prolific researcher and world-leading scientist, whose legacy includes the creation of the Sports Science Institute of South Africa (SISSA); and advisory roles to elite athletes, national teams, and even world-record swimmers. His pioneering theories, such as the Central Governor Theory, have reshaped how we understand human performance in sport. Beyond academia, his advocacy in rugby safety has saved lives and transformed the sport for future generations.
From his school days as a prefect, cricket half-colours recipient, and cadet detachment leader, to his current role as Vice-President of the OD Union, Professor Noakes exemplifies what it means to be an OD—curious, courageous, and committed to serving the greater good.
We extend our heartfelt congratulations to Professor Tim Noakes on this well-deserved recognition. His life's work inspires not only the Bishops community but all who aspire to make a meaningful difference.
