The TimesLIVE / Sunday Times Sports Stars of 2025 list celebrates South Africa's standout performers across all sports, from cricket to cycling, swimming to athletics, highlighting those who made 2025 unforgettable. At the top were Laura Wolvaardt with her World Cup cricket heroics, Pieter Coetzé dominating the pool, Alan Hatherly claiming mountain biking world titles, Temba Bavuma leading the Proteas with poise, and Mbekelezi Mbokazi lighting up the football field.
But for us as a Bishops community, we should be especially proud of numbers 6 and 7 on that national list , two ODs excelling at the very top of their sports. At number 6, Sacha Feinberg‑Mngomezulu (2020F) tore up international rugby, scoring a record 37 points and a hat trick of tries against Argentina, adding tries against Japan, France, Ireland, and two against Wales, and earning recognition as the number 1 fly-half in the world by World Rugby and the number 1 player in the world by Rugby Pass, proving himself a game-changing fly-half on every stage.
At number 7 is another from the Class of 2020, hockey star Mustapha Cassiem (2020W). Mustapha continues to redefine excellence, widely regarded as world-class and arguably the finest international indoor hockey player in the world. He was named Player of the Tournament at the 2025 Nkosi Cup, scored 17 goals at the Indoor Hockey World Cup, and dominated in the Dutch hockey league alongside his brother Dayaan, a true Cassiem family triumph. Add to that an outdoor African Cup goal medal, and it's clear 2025 was a phenomenal year for hockey.
From the Piley Rees to Frank Reid, Woodlands too,
Bishops boys know what it means to push on through.
Fields of green, halls of fame, we've built a name, Sporting legends rising, setting hearts aflame.
